In their first game of the 2015 European Wheelchair Basketball Championships, Spain – the 2013 Bronze Medallists – earned a hard-fought 76-69 win against France.
A strong start by the Spain Men’s Team saw the 2013 Bronze Medallists take an early 9-3 lead; France, however, then staged a stunning comeback to take the first quarter by 23-15.
The second quarter saw Spain respond with 19 points to France’s 16; nevertheless it was the French Team who still held a five point lead (39-34) as the teams went into half time.
It was another nailbiting 10 minutes of play upon the teams’ return to court as Spain fought to level the game – succeeding with just over four minutes remaining in the quarter courtesy of a great shot from Jesus Romero Martin (43-43). The remainder of the third quarter saw the nations trade baskets, but it was Spain who entered the final 10 minutes of the game with a single point advantage (50-49) after Zarzuela fired home a free throw.
The fourth quarter was incredibly tense, both teams raising their game in a fantastic sporting battle. In the end, it was Spain who earned a hard-fought 76-69 win.
