In the first quarter the strength of the German team proved too much for the Italians and although the Italian’s rallied, scoring two baskets from Beatrice Sorina Ion to put 4 points on the scoreboard, it was the German’s who dominated and finished the period with a comfortable lead, 22-4.
A great defensive effort in the second quarter by Germany meant the Italians were kept scoreless for the entirety and some excellent finishing from Heike Friedrich and Barbara Groß saw them rack up another 22 points pushing their lead out to 40 points by half time, 44 -4.
The Italians continued to fight scoring two baskets from Ilaria Margherita D'Anna which doubled their score to 8 points. However, the Germans did not let up and maintained their ruthless efficiency shooting at 67% which pushed them further ahead and they won the quarter 24-4.
The final quarter saw Italy have their highest scoring period of the game with Franca Borin also getting her name on the scoreboard. It was the size of the German forwards that continued to impose themselves on the Italian defence with Heike Friedrich finishing the game with a double double (26 points and 15 rebounds) and sending Germany into the semi-finals with a comfortable 89-14 win.
