Despite a strong start in the championship, Great Britain started slow against a well-marshaled Spain defence through the first quarter. Holding Great Britain up at the net and counter attacking well, the underdogs trailed by only one point at the end of the first quarter with a score of 13-12 to Great Britain.
The momentum of the fast start was continued by Spain through the second quarter, with centers Virginia Perez Gutierrez and Sonia Ruiz Escribano combining for fourteen assists. But despite Spain distributing the ball well, often making light work of Great Britain’s defensive efforts, Great Britain managed to weather the storm and be fortunate enough to edge out a 23-20 lead at the half time buzzer.
But it was Judith Hamer who led the charge for Great Britain after the break, taking her totals by the end of the third quarter to fourteen points, four rebounds and an assist. Shutting out Spain with an 18-0 score-line for the third quarter, Great Britain stormed back to make it a score of 41-20 entering the final period.
Starting the fourth quarter with a three point score from forward Amy Conroy, Great Britain had gained the lead necessary to see the victory through. Though Spain maintained the energy that fuelled their fast start and came back with a best score yet for a single quarter, fourteen points, the competitive game finished with a score of 54-40 to Great Britain.
MVP: Judith Hamer (Great Britain)
