The final game of Day 1 at the 2015 European Wheelchair Basketball Championships saw host nation Great Britain take on the Czech Republic Men’s Team in a thrilling encounter, the GB Men overcoming a great start by their opponents to secure a 92-42 victory.
It was the Czech Republic who were first on the scoreboard, courtesy of Ondrej Pliska, and from there the visitors really piled on the pressure – despite a stunning performance in the key by Great Britain’s Gaz Choudhry – to hold the lead for the game’s opening three-and-a-half minutes (8-5). Choudhry, however, then sunk the first of five three point baskets to level the game on eight points apiece. A basket from Ade Orogbemi saw the GB Men take the lead for the first time in the match, but the teams continued to trade points. In the end, it was the GB Men who were able to find a way to push ahead to 21-14 at the end of the first 10 minutes.
The second quarter was another close affair with the Czech Republic outscoring their opponents by 18-15; nevertheless it was Great Britain who held onto the lead to enter half time with a four point advantage: 36-32.
Sensing the threat, the GB Men were able to find another level of play in the third quarter: dominating both ends of the court to move into the final quarter ahead by 59-40.
The Czech Republic continued their gritty performance in the final quarter, but the GB Men raised their game once more to close out a 92-42 victory.
