The third women’s game of the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships saw host nation Great Britain open their campaign in formidable fashion against Turkey – playing their way to a 76-23 win.
Taking to court in front of a home crowd, the GB Women were quick to earn their place on the scoreboard as Amy Conroy put the team ahead by 2-0 in just six seconds. From there, Great Britain continued to capitalise on their opportunities within the key to take a 17-8 advantage into the second quarter.
With the momentum in their favour, the GB Women continued to push ahead in the second quarter, overcoming the gritty Turkey side to lead by 40-12 at the end of the first half.
After half time, maintaining their focus, the GB Women once again came out strong: Jude Hamer getting the scoring underway with consecutive baskets (44-12) as the team put on stunning performances at both ends of the court; Turkey, however, earning the final points of the quarter courtesy of Naciye Cakir (17-62).
Indeed, Turkey continued to battle hard throughout the fourth quarter, immediately closing Great Britain’s lead down to 62-21; but it was the GB Women who emerged victorious with a 76-23 triumph.
